Abstract:
Contaminant transport through saturated and unsaturated soil profiles consisting of single, double, and triple layers of soils was investigated using laboratory models. The models simulated different natural and engineered solid waste landfill scenarios. In the single, double, and triple layers of soils was investigated using laboratory models. The models simulated different natural and engineered solid wasted landfill scenarios. In the testes the chloride ion migrated through soil/soils by pure diffusion or advection-diffusion contaminant transport mechanisms. The performed tests are categorized into diffusion tests and advetion-diffusion testes. Diffusion testes are sub-categorized into one-dimensional saturated, one – dimensional unsaturated , and two-dimensional saturated tests. Advection – diffusion tests are sub-categorized into single-layer saturated/unsaturated soils, and two-dimensional, single-layer saturated soil. In the test the observed chloride concentration changes in the contaminant source and receptor reservoirs (where appropriate) against time, as well as the observed chloride concentration change against soil/soils depth , were predicted using theoretical models. The agreement between the observed data in the testes and predicated data in the theoretical models was the basis to judge whether the laboratory tests have accurately simulated the performed contaminant transport modeling. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between the observed and predicted data in the performed tests.
