Abstract:
When a soil of low bearing capacity extends to a considerable depth, piles are commonly used to transmit vertical and lateral loads to the surrounding soil, there are some structures where the piles primary function is to transferlarge lateral loads to the ground such as bridge abutments, retaining walls, and structures subjected to wind–earthquake loads.
