Abstract:
Oily sludge is a viscous combination of water, oil, sediments and hydrocarbons concentration thathas been classified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a hazardous organiccompound. Among different biological techniques, composting is more favorable and researchers haveconcerned about it due to its cost-effective, feasible and environmental friendly characteristics. In thispaper, all the information about the composting limiting factors were collected and explained. The limitingfactors that can have great impacts on optimizing treatment of oily sludge and designing the best process toreach the removal of easily degradable constituents were described and sufficiently explained.Furthermore reactions in composting, brief information about the kinetics of composting and heavy metalconcerns are proposed ultimately. Such strategy will describe the type and metabolic activities of bacteria,the presence of possible inhibitors, biodegradability of oily sludge, effects of nutrients, and it can also leadto enhance the efficiency of composting method.
