Abstract:

Introduction: jaundice have seen in 60% of full-term newborns and 80% of preterm neonate. Asia.is The highest incidence of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in the world. Such complications further necessitate the importance of treatment in this disease. Although up to now the phototherapy and blood transfusion have been the treatment of choice in such cases, both have several complication and are expensive. Zinc sulfate may be used to treatment of neonatal jaundice. But the results remain controversial. The gold of this review article is to evaluate the effectiveness of zinc sulfate on neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Methods: In this review article we searched PubMed, EMbase, and Web of science, EBSCO, Cochrane library databases, and BMJ database since 2000 until 2018. The key words that searched was zinc sulfate, neonate, jaundice and hyperbilirubinemiaResults: Zinc is one of the essential elements in neonatal growth, protein synthesis and regulation of inhibitory and stimulatory synapses of the brain. Zinc lower the bilirubin levels by inhibition of the normal enterohepatic cycling of unconjugated bilirubin and decreased the duration of phototherapy. Conclusions: Zinc sulfate could not reduce the TSB on three days and seven days, but lead to significantly decreased duration of phototherapy.
