Abstract:
Introduction: Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder affecting approximately 1% of the generalpopulation. The disease is accompanied by disturbances of cognition, emotion, and social functioning.Combinations of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors participate in the development of the disease. Many evidence show that the variation of COMT gene and Glutathione S-transferases are associated withschizophrenia.. In this study, we have investigated the association between Val158 Met polymorphism of geneCOMT and the deleting polymorphism of GSTM1 and schizophrenia.Method: We genotyped 50 schizophrenic and 50 healthy controls by use of Restricted fragment of lengthpolymorphism (RFLP) for COMT, and multiplex PCR for GSTM1. For statistical results, we use the softwarespss version 20.Result: Analysis of data showed that there is an association between Val158Met polymorphism andschizophrenia, Also for GSTM1, there is no association between the polymorphism and schizophrenia.Conclution: These results provide evidence for a role of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism in theetiopathophysiology of schizophrenia. However, because the study population is not representative of the entireIranian population, further studies with larger population are needed.
