Abstract:
Heat pipe heat exchanger (HPHE) is considered as an energy saving option for industrial boilers. The energy saving is affected by using the hot exhaust gas to preheat the incoming cold fresh air. In this investigation, a model of optimal design of HPHE has been developed and it has been applied by retrofitting a HPHE to a standard commercially available boiler. The model may be categorized as a nonlinear mathematical programming model and the objective function is minimization of total area of HPHE in a given site condition. An economic evaluation is undertaken and conclusions drawn. The model results have been applied to identify the optimal design characteristics of the HPHE heat recovery system which shall be used in Kerman tire complex of Iran.
