Abstract:
High-resolution satellite imagery can be used for human rights-relateddocumentation, monitoring, and advocacy efforts. Most commercialhigh-resolution imagery comes from satellites operated byDigitalGlobe, GeoEye and ImageSat International. Many human rightsissues, but not all, can benefit from the application of satellite imageryby human rights groups. As a first step in any analysis project, it isnecessary to define the boundaries of the area of interest. An area ofinterest can be defined by either a point or a polygon. Google Earth(GE) is a free, stand-alone desktop application that provides satelliteimagery of much of the world and is useful for identifying an area ofinterest. Once the geographic coordinates of an area of interest havebeen established, the search begins for available imagery.
