Abstract:

Focal epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures with abnormal brain activity in epileptic zones. To characterize the seizure generation mechanisms associated with the epileptogenic process, the brain nonlinear dynamics can be analyzed in the epileptic zone using surface and intracranial EEG signals. The analysis of functional interactions between epileptic foci and other epilepsy-specific brain networks might better explain the complex dynamics of the epileptogenic networks. In this talk, I will present approaches commonly used to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of brain networks in patients with focal epilepsy using surface and intracranial EEG. I will also present nonlinear tools and the dynamic causal modeling (DCM) used to investigate transitions from interictal to ictal states. We will further take a look at modern network science to investigate large-scale structural and/or functional brain-network organization through connectivity analysis.
