Abstract:
Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymeric networks that have hydrophilic functional groups in their structure. They can adsorb and retain water in their structure without dissolving. One of the applications of hydrogels, which has been especially noticed in recent years, is wastewater treatment. In this study, it has been found that nanocomposite hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose grafted poly acrylamide-containing clay (CMC-g-P(AAm)/MMT) exhibit a high Malachite Green (MG) removal efficiency. The effect of montmorillonite (MMT) on the swelling and adsorption of the CMC-g-P(AAm)/MMT hydrogels was investigated. As expected, the swelling percentage decreases by increasing clay content in the hydrogel and the removal percentage of dye increases with an increase in nanoparticle percentage. In conclusion, CMC-g-P(AAm)/MMT hydrogels can be successfully employed for the removal of dye from wastewater.
