The potential role of adaptive management in environmental decision making

Adaptive Management (AM) is a new method to reduce uncertainty in ecology with combining advantages of trial and error and Scientific Experiment. AM is incorporation of practicality and importance of trial and error with severity and clearness of the Scientific Experiment. Applying scientifically acceptable AM approach needs evaluation of probability of predictable ecological reactions under dissimilar management alternatives, the capability to distinguish among competing theories about those responses and the integration of explicit methods for linking learning from the trial and error and Scientific Experiment. Various case studies illustrated the importance of taking AM actions in solution of more complicated ecosystem problems. In tracking experiences with AM, the results will be helpful by a better understanding of the situations in which an AM approach is suitable and useful. AM is suited to large, complex ecosystem reinstatement models, that involve high level of risk, multiple and varying objectives. AM is able to play an important role in complicated activities.
