Abstract:

Background: Eryngium thyrsoideum is a species of Eryngium genus (Apiaceae). Previous investigations reveal that the anti-diabetes effect can be observed in some Eryngium species which include E.foetidum and E.creticum(1,2).The purpose of the present investigation is evaluation of anti-diabetes effect of E.thyrsoideum in mices with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Methods: First, aerial parts of this species has been collected in the flowering season from Azerbaijane sharghi province, Maragheh and extracted with ethanol 70% via maceration method. In this study,40 male NMRI mice in the weight range of 37 gr,in 4 groups (n=10) were selected including:1.Healthy control group 2.Diabetic control group, Diabetes was induced with I.p injection of streptozotocin (150 mg/kg single dose)(3,4).3,4.Diabetic groups which received (100mg/kg) (300mg/kg) I.p injection of extract plant for 21 days, respectively. At the end of study blood and liver were collected for measuring, blood sugar, serum insulin and OGTT test. Analysis of data was evaluated through SPSS, version 24. Results: Gruops which received extract at 100 and 300 mg/kg doses for 21 days did not significantly decrease blood glucose levels compared to streptozotocin (STZ) group. Extract at doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg caused significantly reduce in weight of diabetic mice in 21 days compared to the STZ group (P<0.05).In the OGTT test extract of 300mg/kg doses during time did not significantly reduce blood glucose levels compared to the dose of 100 mg/kg, in other words, the effect of the low dose extract on reducing blood glucose was more than the high dose. Conclusion: Present study results showed extract plant did not effect of the level blood glucose and caused reduce efficiency in weight of diabetic mice and low dose extract can be decrease level blood glucose in the OGTT test.
