Numerical Modeling of Diaphragm Wall Behavior in Bangkok Soil Using Hardening Soil Model abstract
Diaphragm walls are commonly used in Bangkok as temporary soil retention systems and permanent foundation walls. The classical linear-elastic perfectly plastic Mohr- Coulomb model has widely been used to predict their performance in the course of their design. However, the observed ground deformation has, generally, been found to differ from those predicted. A numerical study was, therefore, performed incorporating the more recent Hardening Soil model to examine its applicability in capturing the diaphragm wall behavior in Bangkok subsoil. The model was first calibrated for a well monitored case in Bangkok by comparing the predicted diaphragm wall performance and the observed behavior. Then it was applied for three other cases for the purpose of validation. Results show that the predicted performance compares very well with observed behavior suggesting the use of the Hardening Soil Model for Bangkok subsoil.
