Abstract:

Nowadays, due to the development of cities and the requirement to build structures in areas with soils having bearing capacity lower than the allowable limit, engineers are required to use new trends of improving soil strength parameters. This application, which is called soil improvement, is used in order to enhance bearing capacity, stability and preventing excess settlement of soil. In recent years, soil reinforcement using geosynthetics, a novel trend of soil improving, has been increasingly used in the form of planar, three-dimensional or a combination of both. In current research, comparison and evaluation of the effects of different parameters on bearing capacity, stability and soil settlement, using the experimental researches done on geosynthetic-reinforced slopes, are represented and discussed. Results have shown that the stabilization of slopes with geosynthetics has become an effective and routine geotechnical engineering practice recently. Reduction in earthwork volumes, reduction in settlement of footing, enhancement of bearing capacity, and improvement of the slope stability are also proven advantages of using geosynthetics.
