Assessment of intramuscular vitamin D effect on respiratory status and quality of life of asthmatic patients abstract
Introduction: Recent studies revealed role of Vitamin D3 as a potent immune system regulator with potential role in various allergic diseases such as asthma. Studies shows that the vitamin D deficiency has been associated with airway hyperresponsiveness, lower pulmonary function, worse asthma control, increased exacerbation rate andreduced steroid responsiveness. For fast treatment of Vitamin D deficiency, prevention of patient forgetfulness in regular drug taking and positive psychological effect of injection in public belief we designed a study of evaluation of effect of intramuscular form of Vitamin D on respiratory status and Quality of life in asthmatic patients.Materials and Methods: In a case control study (before/after) we investigated the effect of vitamin D, IM injection on 20 patients with moderate to severe asthma. Patients received two intramuscular injection of Vitamin D3 300,000 IU with a month gap between and should take spirometry test and fill in the ST George s respiratory questionnaire(SGRQ) in the start and the end of the study. Results: Two months after the start of the study, spirometry test and SGRQ as index of QOL showed a significant differences in comparison with the results received in the first stage of the study. Conclusion: Vitamin D3 injection led to improvement in QOL and positive effect on respiratoryvariables (FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and MEF 25-75).
