Abstract:
Background and Aim : The incidence of preterm birth in developing countries remains one of the majorchallenges in the field of reproductive health and delivery. This can lead to serious problems and in thisgroup of births the infant mortality rate and its complications are far higher than those born at term. Cervicalinsufficiency is one of the cases that can lead to preterm labor. A short cervical refers to cervixes that areshorter than 25 mm in length. For this reason, medicinal methods such as progesterone and interventionalmethods such as cerclage and pessary are used to prevent preterm labor. Purpose of the study isComparative Evaluation of Cervical Cerclage and Arabin Pessary for the Prevention of Preterm Labor insingleton pregnancy. Methods : This study is a semi-clinical trial that was performed on 110 women with singleton pregnancywith gestational age of 18-20 weeks referring to Alzahra hospital between 1396- 1398. They were dividedinto two groups: patients with cerclage and the other group had pessary. Individual and clinical informationwas recorded in a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 software and t-test, chi-square andFisher exact tests. P-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results : There was a statistically significant difference between the number of neonates intensive care unit(NICU) in the cerclage and pessary group (P-value = 0.013). Also, the weight of newborns was significantlyhigher than the mothers with cerclage (P-value = 0.000). On the other hand, the rate of PROM occurrencein the cerclage group was significantly lower than pessary group (P-value = 0.007).Conclusion : Cerclage had a better effect on preventing preterm labor, improving neonatal weight anddecreasing the duration of pre-term neonatal hospitalization compared to pessary group.
