Abstract:

Introduction: Cough reflex is common after fentanyl injection and frequently associated with increased intracranial, intraocular and intra-abdominal pressures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of duration on the incidence and severity of (FIC). Method: This double blind clinical trial done was on the 150 patients, 18-50 years oldwith ASA I. The patients were randomly divided into 3 groups (Each group 50 patients) anesthesia to chnique and agents were similar in all groups. Fentanyl was injectedintravenously 2, 15 and 30 seconds in 3 groups respectively. The incidence of cough within 2 minute after injection was recorded and statistioly analyzed was done. Results: The patients were similar regarding to age, sex and weight in 3 groups. The occurrence of cough was 24%, 2% and 6% respective in 3 groups that showed significant difference between the 3 groups (p<0.01 between G 1&2 and p<0.008 between G 1&3). There was not any significant difference between duration of injection & severity of cough. Conclusion: The results revealed that increase duration of injection can decrease the incidence of FIC, accordingly we recommend that fentanyl should be injected slowlyduring 15-30 seconds.
