Abstract:

Introduction and Aim: Glacium flavum (yellow hornpoppy) belongs to the family of Papaveraceae. G. flavum is an almost glabrous perennial herb with large yellow flowers and elongated capsule. The infusion of aerial part of G. flavum was used as antitussive. It has been demonstrated that the aerial part of G. flavum presented pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic, hypoglycemic, and antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Glacium flavum extract in different concentrations on apoptosis in the MCF-7 cell line. Methods: MCF-7 cells were seeded and treated with 0.1, 0.5, 1 mg/ml concentrations of Glacium flavum extract for 1, 4 and 7 days. Cell viability was evaluated on certain days after treatment. We used MTT assay to confirm cell viability. The absorbance of plates was measured at 570 nm using an ELISA reader. Also, Giemsa staining was used to detect apoptosis. Results: Our observations showed a significant change in cell viability of treated cells with Glacium flavum extract. Giemsa staining confirmed apoptotic morphology in treated cells. Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude that Glacium flavum extract had an anticancer effect on MCF-7 cells.
