Antibiotic resistance and prevalence of imp-1, imp-2, gim and spm-1 genes in non-infectious children under 3 years old in Fars province

Abstract:

Introduction and Objective: Escherichia coli is one of the first bacterial species that is colonized in the gastrointestinal tract of newborns and in some cases can cause infectious diseases in human. These bacteria can be an important source of antibiotic resistance genes including carbapenemase genes. The aim of the present study is investigation of the antimicrobial resistance and prevalence of imp-1, imp-2, gim and spm-1 genes among E. coli strains isolated from feces of healthy children under three years old in Fars province.Materials and Methods: Two hundred twelve E. coli strains were collected from none-infectious children and examined after culture in a proprietary medium. Resistance to 7 antibiotics including chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, tetracycline, cefotaxime, streptomycin, gentamicin and imipenem was assessed by the disk diffusion method according to the CLSI1172016, then imipenem resistant strains were evaluated for presence of imp-1, imp-2, gim and spm-1 by PCR method.Results: The percent of resistance against chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, tetracycline, cefotaxime, streptomycin, gentamicin and imipenem was gain (7/07), (16/98), (17/45), (23/58), (12/73), (1/88) and (1/41) respectively. Most isolates were sensitive to gentamicin (97.17%); however, evaluated genes were not found in any of these isolates.Conclusion: Review showed the abundance of antimicrobial resistance among commensal isolates; thus, is needed to control the use of antimicrobial agents among people. Increasing of antibiotic resistance is a threat to the success of treatment using antimicrobial compounds in countries that have a high intake of antibiotics.
