Abstract:

Human resource management (HRM) systems combine human resource processes and an organization’s information systems. An HRM system widely represents one of the modules of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. ERP systems serve as information systems that control the business and consist of integrated software applications such customer relationship management, supply chain management, manufacturing, finance, and human resources. ERP implementation projects substantially have high failure rates; and although a number of factors affecting success and failure rates have already been studied, limited attention has been paid to the implementation teams and how to increase their efficiency. In the present paper, it is argued that shared leadership is an appropriate approach to improving the performance of ERP implementation teams. Shared leadership represents a form of team leadership where the team members, rather than only a single team leader, get engaged in leadership behaviors. While shared leadership has received increased scientific attention during the past decade, it has not been applied to ERP implementation teams; therefore, the present study aims to explore the application of shared leadership to ERP implementation teams. Toward this end, first, the issues related to ERP and HRM systems implementation and teams as well as the concept of shared leadership are described; then the theoretical and empirical literature is reviewed, and an integrative framework is presented; and finally, the application of shared leadership to ERP and HRM systems implementation is described.
