Abstract:

In this research, we compare performance of production control systems in a serial production line. Kanban and CONWIP control systems are focused on and analyzed. We evaluate the performance of each control system with respect to the average WIP and the system throughput. By using the concept of critical circuits and applying the Little's law, the performance measures are calculated. We show that the superiority of one control system over the other depends on a configuration of parameters in the system, such as processing times and number of kanbans employed in the system.
