Abstract:

Background and Aim : Background and Aim: Burning is a catastrophic burn that causes many problems in the patient such as pain, lack of confidence in the medical team. Prescribing opiate analgesics and anxiolytic drugs alone cannot completely alleviate the pain. Most medications are sedative and analgesic, and they have side effects and endurance, so other methods are needed to help relieve pain. One of these methods is pain management training for patients and peer education to reduce pain is proposed today. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of peer education on background pain in burn patients in Shahid Motahhari Burn Center in Tehran. Methods : Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial with control group. Sampling was continuous and 86 patients with burns admitted to Shahid Motahhari Burn Center affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences were randomly by Random allocation rule divided into control and intervention groups according to the inclusion criteria. Peer education was provided for intervention group in addition to the routine training on strategies for reducing pain, peer experience in burn management and the necessity of follow-up treatment for 45 to 60 minutes during 3 sessions a day. The control group received only routine training. Background Pain were measured before and after the intervention by Horizontal Visual Scale. Data were analyzed by software version 22 and Chi-square, Fisher exact, T-test, T-paired. Results : Results: The results showed that the mean scores of Background Pain in the control and intervention groups were not significantly different before the intervention. Paired t-test results after the intervention showed that, the mean score of Background Pain in both groups decreased but this decrease was higher in the intervention group than in the control group and the difference between two groups was statistically significant. Conclusion : Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it can be said that peer education is effective in reducing pain in burn patients. Peer education along with routine training can reduce pain in burn patients more than only routine training. Therefore, peer education can be suggested to nurses and patient care planning authorities to reduce pain in burn patients.
