Abstract:

This paper presents a new Time Varying Particle Swarm Optimization Acceleration Coefficients (TV-PSOAC) as a novel heuristic approach for simultaneous coordinated designing of the Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) damping controller and power system stabilizers (PSSs) in power system. The Coordinated design problem of PSS and TCSC damping controllers over a wide range of loading conditions is converted to a single optimization problem with the time domain-based objective function that is solved by a TV-PSOAC method which has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results. By minimizing the proposed fitness function in which oscillatory characteristics between areas are included and thus the interactions among the TCSC controller and PSS nder transient conditions in the multi-machine power system are improved. To ensure the robustness of the proposed stabilizers, the design process takes a wide range of operating conditions into account. The generator speed and the electrical power are chosen as global input signals for the strategy. The system performance is assessed through the Time multiplied Absolute value of the Error (ITAE), Eigenvalues and Figure of Demerit (FD) analysis performance indices. The results with the proposed technique demonstrate a satisfactory robust performance and excellent capability in damping power system local and inter area low frequency oscillations.
