Abstract:
Direct volume rendering is a method used for the visualization of scientific data. This work presents an analysis of the four main direct volume rendering techniques. Ray casting, shear-warp, splatting and texture mapping are compared in terms of rendering principles. By rendering principles we mean apparatus such as transfer function based texture assignment, sampling, composition, volumetric ray traversal and projection on a 2D plane.
