Abstract:

The complementary investigations on the chemical communication of date palm rhinoceros beetle, Or)'ctes e/egolfs Prell. (Col.: Scarabaeidae) Date palm rhinoceros beetle (DPRB). Oryctes eJegons Prell. (Col.: Scarabaeidae) is one of the most important pests of palm in Iran and Asia. Several experiments on the possibility of the existence ofthe aggregation or sexual pheromones in DPRB and extraction, identification, bioassay and field trapping assays. have been carried out in infested date palm grove~ of Saravan region durig 2001-2002. A ca11ing behaviour or pheromone secretion like liquid droplets was not observed. A Specific. odour of the identification pheromone. only was detected in males during observations on DPRBs nocturnal activity. Females of PHB with more activity in date palm core. released more kairomone and attracted the conspecitic individuals of both sexes. but only males of DPRB produced and emit an aggregation pheromone which attract the conspecific individuals of both sexes. A chemical named ID as the major and two named AC and EE have been identified as the minor components of the males OPRB s pheromone. The JD compound alone was a weak attractant, but its application with date palm core strongly synergized its anractiveness.The sex ratio of DPRB s captured in traps was 1: 1. There was a significant different in the number of catches by 10 compound in comparison with other blended compound alone and mixed with ID.The traps located at the height of5 meter caught more individuals of DPRB s than traps located at the height of Zero and 2 meler. The resualts indicated that the pheromone-based traps with above characteristics can be used as an effective control measure of DPRB and also population dynamics studies and monitoring
