Abstract:

The adaptibility of different grass and legume species are reported for north of Khorasn. In many studies mixed species have been shown to produce more forage yield in dry land condition than pure stand. In this experiment Lucerne(Medicago sativa) and crested wheatgass (Agropyron desertrum) cultivated as pure and mixed stand in Sisab Research Station in north of Khorasan.Treatments were two levels of seed weight with 10 and 15 kg/ha and five levels of seed mixture including 025 and 100 percent of each species. Experiment carried out as factorial with a randomized complete block design. Factors such as growth stages, length of growing season and forage production of different treatments were measured for three years after plant establishment. In general forge yield and stability of production was greater in mixed stands than pure stands.Average of economical productivity pure stand of alfalfa and mix of alfalfa and crested wheatgass stands were increased 50% than economical productivity wheat of dry farming in the studied region.The growing season became longer when the grass and legume cultivated as mixed pasture compare to pure pasture. Plant treatments with 10kg/ha seed weight showed better results than 15 kg/ha seed weight in terms of forage production and plant density. So, it seems that mixture of grass and legume with 10 kg/ha seed weight and with 25 to 75 percent of grass seed weight as mixed stand would be suitable in semi-arid region such as north of Khorasan.
