Abstract:
In order to evaluate reed as a raw material for wood & paper industries, three main regions of of Iran consist of south, North and East were selected for this study, phraninites australis is dominant species in these regions and this study confeentranted on it as well. Chemiel components and biometry of fibets were determined with four and thirty riplications respectively. Statistical arialysis showed that there were no significant differences among three rigions in fiber lengih and luttien diarneter but reversely fiber width and cell wall thickncas showed dignificant differences, The highest fiber length mean was 1.39mm. for Notrh (Anazli) Confioients of papermaking of fibers also were calculated for each region. The resuits also showed that there are significant differences between regions and subregions at 5% level. Notrh had the higbest and loweat cellulose and lignin contents respectively. The common reed, P.australis, covers vast region in south of Iran. Specially, there is possibility of executing harvest in Hoor-Alazim canebrake as a reed natural provenance. It has proper properties for papermaking in comparison of typical nonwood materials. Chips were pulped using typical kraft, soda and NSSC processes. Physical trials tests of pulp were made using T APPI procedures. Pulps were beaten in a PFI mill to 'f. . ml csf. Handsheets were made from the refined reed pulps for strength properties. Screened yield and kappa number of soda pulp were about similar to kraft pulp. NSSC pulp has lower kappa number than the soda at the equivalent screened yield. Energy consumption for beating from kraft, soda and NSSC reed pulps reduced, respectively. The initial pulps freeness of reed pulps were close to typical hardwood, thus good drainage and runnability on reed papermaking would be expect. Overall, the physical properties of reed handsheets were higher than newsprint and fluting pulps of Mazandaran Company. Soda and NSSC reed pulps can be used in production of newsprint and fluting papers based on the properties. ص Keywords: Reed, Nonwood fiber, Pulping, Kraft, Soda, NSSC, Hand sheet
