Comparison of spiritual intelligence in individuals with Gender Identity Disorder (GID) and normal people

Abstract:

Introduction: Human sexual identityis influenced by two acquiredand non-acquired factors should be developed. Genderis anon-acquired property, including biological characteristics, physical and chromosomal that distinguishes men and women. Also genderisan acquired characteristic that distinguishesthe men and women according to the behavioral, social, cultural and religious. Spiritual intelligence isnothing more than a person's mental ability and it is beyond the conventional psychological development. Therefore, self awareness included the relationship with the transcendent self, other people, the earth and all creatures. According to thereligious society of Iran, spiritual intelligenceis crucial in people with impairedhealth status and gender identity. The study of spiritual intelligence individualswith Gender Identity Disorder appears necessary for the treatment of these patientsthat has not been donein our country. This was a cross-sectional study. The studypopulation waspeople witha definite diagnosis ofgender identity disorder in TehranPsychiatric Institute, included 30 patients with a definite diagnosis of genderidentity disorder and 30 normal subjects who had not dysfunction in one or twoaxisand were matched according to theage of the cases (individuals withgenderidentitydisorder). Spiritual intelligence is determined by using the KingQuestionnaire (2008) in 4 fields of dimensions of thought, sense of personal,transcendental awareness and consciousness expansion mode and was compared inthe twho groups. The results showed that the mean spiritual intelligencsignificantly lower than the mean person with Gender Identity Disorder. Thenormal people had significantlyhigher scoresin the fields of thought, critical,conscious transcendental than those with Gender Identity Disorder gained while intheareas of expansion of the consciousness and create personal meaning thedifferences between the two groups were not significant. However, the meanscoresof normal peoplein the two are asmentioned above were higher in normalpeople. The results showed that presence of low spiritual intelligence in GIDpatients, spiritual interventions should be done in these people.
