Abstract:
The Internet of things (IoT) is a network of objects that can connect to the Internet anywhere through software intelligence and sensors. Employing the Internet telecommunications infrastructure, the IoT enables objects to exchange information with producers, operators, or other connected devices without human intervention. The IoT devices have poor security structures. Due to the widespread use of the IoT in various aspects of industries and people's daily lives, its vulnerability and penetrability would be a described as a security nightmare. Known as a distributed cryptographic ledger, blockchain uses a peer-to-peer (P2P) network to reach a consensus and monitor the accuracy of operations. A blockchain is considered an appropriate solution to security and privacy improvement in the IoT due to its innate features such as high security, immutability, analyzability, and controllability. Nevertheless, the integration of these two technologies would entail serious challenges. This study aims to review the related works on the IoT-blockchain integration and the proposed integration methods in relation to the IoT features. For this purpose, the proposed methods are classified as static and dynamic categories. Based on the previous studies, the existing challenges and future research areas are then discussed.
