Fabrication of Erythromycin loaded Poly vinyl alcohol and Ethyl cellulose polymeric films for wound healing drug delivery abstract

In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Ethylcellulose (EC) films as topical wound dressing systems for the sustained release of Erythromycin (EM). The drug loaded PVA and EC films were characterized by FTIR, and the obtained spectra showed a good dispersion of drug in the polymers without any chemical reaction. Additionally, mechanical specifications of the prepared formulations were investigated. It was shown that EC has better swelling behavior in comparison with PVA. The invitro release profiles of EM was recorded at 25˚C. EM has shown initial burst release from both formulations, lasting 22 and 48 hours for PVA and EC based formulations, respectively. The results showed that EC has more extended drug release path, and proves to be an efficient drug carrier for EM.
