Nonlinear Dynamic Behaviour of the Benchmark Steel Structure, Updated by E-CMCM Method abstract
Analysis of structural models, which characterize the actual behavior of buildings during strong ground motions, is a vital need for their seismic evaluation, rehabilitation and/or control of structures especially those their performances are very important after earthquakes. Many researchers have shown that extracted modal characteristics of a building from dynamic tests are totally different from those obtained by analytical model. Model updating methods aim to reduce these differences. This paper addresses the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the IASCASCE benchmark steel structure, which is updated using E-CMCM method recently developed by the authors. Three types; undamaged, damaged and updated model (three models) of the building are examined and compared, in detail. Results show that responses of the damaged model may be so different from undamaged one, but are entirely consistent with the updated models. Results insist on the importance of using updated model of buildings and bridges for their seismic evaluation and retrofitting plans.
