Epidemiological and Maternal Features of Maternal Mortality in the West of Iran: Hamadan, 2011-2019

Abstract:

Background: Maternal mortality is an important public health problem, and is perceived as asensitive indicator of the socioeconomic status and healthcare services in a given country. Thisstudy aims to describe epidemiological features of maternal mortality in Hamadan province inwestern Iran.Material and Methods: In this cross- sectional study, 50 maternal deaths that occurred in allhospitals and delivery places in the Hamadan province from March 2011 to January 2019 werestudied for epidemiological feature and history of pregnancy care of maternal death. Finally,the extracted data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in Stata software version 14.Results: Our findings show that the mortality due to pregnancy and childbirth was 18.07 per100,000 live birth. Majority of maternal death occurred in women aged 20-34 years living inurban areas who were mostly housewives. Kabudar Ahang and Razan townships had thehighest maternal rate.Conclusions: The present study revealed that maternal mortality is higher among women aged20-34 years that living in urban areas who were mostly housewives. Cesarean delivery, havinga history of abortion, and gestational age under 37 weeks were other factors associated withmaternal death. We suggest that pregnancy cares and training programs should be focused inthese high risk groups.
