Abstract:

As a part of an experimental study on the cross-anisotropic behavior of a typical granular base material under true triaxial repetitive loading, the effect of compaction method on the soil response was considered. Two types of compaction i.e. static plunger compaction, and vibrating compaction were investigated. The test results showed that the permanent deformations of statically compacted samples were three to six times greater than those of vibratory compacted samples depending on the applied stresses. However, the differences between the resilient deformations of variously compacted samples were not so great. Based on these results it was concluded that although the type of compaction has only a limited effect on the resilient response of the granular materials, it may have a significant effect on their plastic deformations. This showed another indication to the efficiency of vibrating compaction method to avoid of high permanent deformations in a granular base
