West Karoon Oil Fields EOR - Shall We Go for Smart Waterflooding? abstract
Waterflooding as a secondary EOR and Smart waterflooding as a tertiary chemical EOR method haslong history which mainly have been applied in sandstone reservoirs. On the contrary, in Iran there area few oil fields that water injection has been experienced. However, the need for chemical EORimplementation and lack of gas source availability pushes Iranian authorities to go for waterfloodingin the WK area. The main challenges of the nominated oil fields in the west Karoon area is that theymainly producing from carbonate rocks with different fluid characteristics specially their API gravitythat is limited to the heavy crude oils and the size of the project in terms of area and economy. Immensestudies are needed in order to evaluate the possibility of approach success.Reference to the favored projects implemented in the world, by tuning injection water in terms ofsalts and other rheology properties by adding surfactant and/or polymers; the rock wettabilityalteration, interfacial tension reduction and better mobility control to help increasing sweep efficiencyare variables that would increase recovery factor under smart waterflooding which can encourage usingthat approach.
