Guillain-Barre Syndrome: A Retrospective Study of Clinical and Epidemiological Features in Kurdistan, West of Iran, From ۲۰۰۵ To ۲۰۱۴

Abstract:
Background and aims: The most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis of all ages is Guillain-Barresyndrome (GBS). Further understanding of this disease is important because of its life-threateningnature in life. The aim of this study was to conduct a ۱۰-year survey on epidemiological and clinicalfeatures of GBS in Tohid and Besat hospitals, Sanandaj, Iran, from ۲۰۰۵ to ۲۰۱۴.Methods: This study was a retrospective study, based on medical records, in which ۹۸ hospitalizedcases in Tohid and Besat hospitals (tertiary referral hospitals), Sanandaj, Iran, between ۲۰۰۵ and ۲۰۱۴were investigated. The epidemiological and clinical information was obtained from eligible cases.Data analysis was performed using SPSS version ۱۶. Chi-square and t test were used for analyses. Thesignificant level was considered at P < ۰.۰۵.Results: The mean age of cases with GBS was ۲۲.۱۶ years. Among final ۶۹ patients who were studied,۳۶ cases (۵۲.۲%) were male and ۳۳ cases (۴۷.۸%) were female. Most cases of disease occurred inthe spring. Thirty-nine patients (۵۶.۵۲%) had risk factors like history of gastrointestinal infections,respiratory infections, and surgery ۲-۴ weeks before the disease onset. Four cases (۱۰.۲۵%) neededmechanical ventilation. The most common protocol of treatment was IVIg (n = ۴۷, ۶۸%). More thanhalf of the patients (۵۲.۲%) achieved relative recovery. In ۶ patients, (۸.۷%) relapse was occurred.Conclusion: Our study showed that there was a significant relationship between sensory- motorinvolvement, gender and age. Moreover, the relationship between gender and prognosis was indicated(P < ۰.۰۵).
