Abstract:

This study compares the new method based on contourlet transform and Laplacian Pyramid to detect damage types in the plate structures. Contourlet is a two-dimensional development of wavelet transform that overcome the deficiency of traditional methods such as wavelet transform. Based on the previous studies, wavelets have inferior performance to identify the defects which have details in multiple directions such as curves. Hence, in this study, the contourlet transform is introduced as a stronger representation. Also, the performance of the Laplacian pyramid as a new approach is compared to the contourlet transform to investigate its capability to identify defects to find a better alternative for traditional methods. Accordingly, these transforms' ability to demonstrate all kinds of damages are displayed with a four fixed plate with various damages. The results show contourlet transform is an excellent and efficient method to identify all types of damages. Furthermore, the performance and correctness of the transforms have been verified via the experiment.
