Abstract:
In this study, the thermal-hydraulic performance of an elliptic micro pin-fin heat sink type is investigated using numerical simulation and Ansys-Fluent software. Six different cases with heights from ۰.۳۱۲۵ to ۰.۶۲۵ have been analyzed to obtain the optimum thermal-hydraulic performance. The height of the channel type heat sink (conventional heat sink) is ۰.۶۲۵ mm for fin height, while the remaining five heat sinks have open space between the pin-fin upper surface and heat sink top wall. The range of the Reynolds number is ۳۰۰-۹۰۰, and the constant heat flux of ۵۰ ۲ / W cm is applied at the bottomsurface of the microchannel; also, a single-phase liquid water coolant is used to dissipate heat. The results show less thermal performance of heat sinks with shorter fin heights (۰.۳۱۲۵ – ۰.۴۲۸۷۵ mm). It has been found that a heat sink with a fin height of ۰.۵ mm has maximum thermal performance, which is even higher than fin heights of ۰.۵۶۲۵ mm and ۰.۶۲۵ mm (completely closed heat sink). Open space affects flow behaviour and has been identified as an important parameter in evaluating micro pin-fin heat sinks' overall thermal performance.
