Abstract:

Introduction: The sharing of medical knowledge from is an integral part of being in health professions. As medicine and health sciences advance, so do the methods used to pass on the knowledge to future generations. Current use of case base discussion is a move to a more interactive and student focused learning environment for the student compared to the classical lecture-based learning. As technology develops, we can further the student focus of learning and provide a more tailored experience.Methods: Using a key word search, instances of the flipped classroom being applied in the worlds of health sciences were identified and the reported benefits and limitations explored.Results: Two key studies were identified which discussed the implementation of a flipped classroom in dental and nursing studies.Conclusion: The flipped classroom has shown benefits in improved student knowledge and skills. There has also been demonstrated improved student satisfaction. Using the flipped classroom students have developed their independence and applied this in self-assessment. However, the students’ own critical thinking and self-motivation were also identified as a limitation of the flipped classroom. As workload increased, the satisfaction of students decreased. A careful implementation alongside traditional methods could be used to introduce the benefits of the flipped classroom while minimising risks.
