Combination of Qanat and subsurface dam for water resource management abstract

Subsurface dam and Qanat have been used for many years as the important sources of water in different parts of the world. Nowadays, there is not adequate attention to Qanat. On the other hand, there are a great desire for constructing and using subsurface dams in many arid and semiarid parts of the world such as Iran.A combination of these two structure was established in ancient Iran, in Isfahan,Vazvan Qanat. Nowadays, new methods and techniques such as Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing have developed processes of site selection in time and accuracy. Study of the Vazvan Qanat emphasis on the idea to combine these two structure in a new way .Considering some main criteria and sub criteria for subsurface dam site selection, with Qanat existence, some suitable suggested locations construction a combination of Qanat and subsurface dam in Pishkoh basin ,Taft,Yazd province has been delineated. Some of the advantages of underground dam are local use, close to the demand sites and capacity of gathering water in each season. These positive points when combine with reclamation Qanat cause a renewable situation for Qanat and its efficiency as a water resource management process. Underground dam can be built in Qanats shaft with constructing some hatches inside dam's wall. So water can be stored in cold seasons with a high percentage of rain.Using this combination the main and basic weakness of Qanat can be covered and removed. So, it causes a strong and optimum usage of Qanats water
