Dynamic simulation of helical gears for uniform wear fault monitoring abstract

The wear fault is a common fault in mating gears, which can be observed on tooth flanks be-cause of insufficient lubrication and long-period operation. This fault causes deviations in gear tooth profile. As a result, the Time Varying Mesh Stiffness (TVMS) and Geometric Transmis-sion Error (GTE) gears in mesh will be affected which manifests in the dynamic response of a gear transmission system. This study considers a uniform wear fault in a helical gear pair, which is modeled by Archard’s method. Then, a 12 DoF dynamic model is employed to eval-uate the dynamic response of gears in the presence of tooth profile deviations due to wear. In this regard, the TVMS of helical gears are computed by the thin-slice method, and then the differential equations are solved by the oft-used Newmark method. Finally, the effects of wear fault in the meshing frequency amplitude and its harmonics and some Time Synchronous Av-erage (TSA) based features are appraised.
