Chemically Activated Combustion Synthesis of B4C-TiB2 Nanocomposite abstract

the self- propagating high temperature synthesis of B4C-TiB2 composite from elemental powders in the presence of boosters (Teflon) is studied. Specifically, the dual role played by the polymer, as reaction promoter and as carburizing agent, is investigated. Results show that when Teflon is considered as a carbon source for complete substitution of graphite, the most purified product was obtained. The synthesis products were investigated by XRD (X-ray Diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope). TEM images showed that the crystallite size of powders is ≤100nm
