Zinc enrichment of edible-medicinal mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus for production of natural dietary supplements abstract
The effect of different concentrations of zinc (Zn) on the content and the rate of Zn enrichment in the mycelium and fruiting body of Pleurotus ostreatus cultivated in liquid medium were studied. The results showed that the optimum mycelium growth and fruiting body production was obtained in a liquid medium containing 100 mg/L of Zn. At a Zn concentration of 200 mg/L, a maximal Zn content in the mycelia and fruiting bodies was reached 1.795 ± 0.084 and 0.153 ± 0.006 mg/g DW, respectively. While, the highest rate of Zn enrichment of mycelia and fruiting bodies was 9.12 ± 0.09% and 0.44 ± 0.27% at Zn concentration of 100 mg/L, respectively. Our findings indicate the potential of Zn enrichment in the mycelia is very higher than the fruiting bodies. The fundamental information obtained in this study will be useful for production of Zn-enriched foods and natural Zn dietary supplement.
