Abstract:
In the Rules for the Direction of the Mind, Descartes defines "method" and "intuition" specifically. However, his book has no determinate definition of "Universal Wisdom." The main aim of this essay is to clarify the meaning of Universal Wisdom and its connection with the concepts of method and intuition. In the Rules, Descartes aims to achieve a "view to forming true and sound judgments about whatever comes before it." (CSM, ۱۹۸۵, V.۱, p.۹). In this essay, the assumption is that to achieve this ability, a deep understanding of "Universal Wisdom," "method," and "intuition" is necessary. Furthermore, this essay demonstrates that understanding the meaning of universal wisdom depends on exposing a new conception of the method and intuition in the Rules.
