Clinical evaluation of liothyronine (Iran Hormone): Comparison with Cytomel [Persian]

In order to evaluate the effect of liothyronine formulated by Iran Hormone Co.(LT۳,IH), ۲۰ patients with primary hypothyroidism received ۲۵mg LT۳-IH daily. Another ۴۰ hypothyroids were randomly divided into ۴ groups and entered a double blind clinical trail. Two groups received ۳۷.۵ and ۵۰mg LTrIH and other two groups took ۳۷.۵ and ۵۰mg Cytomel (LTr SKF). Serum T۴, T۳ and TSH concentrations and resin T۳ uptake were measured by commercial kits before and one month after intervention. After one month therapy with ۲۵g LT۳-IH, T۳ increased from ۸۰±۳۳ to ۱۴۲±۳۶ ng/dl and TSH decreased from ۵۸±۲۴ to ۰.۵±۰.۷ /AJ/m\. Both LT۳-IH and Cytomel increased T۳ and decreased T۴ and TSH concentration; TSH ۶۲±۲۸ & ۸۱±۳۹ before and ۰.۸±۰.۷ & ۴.۰±۴.۵ after one month of ۳۷.۵/;g T, daily; TSH ۷۸±۳۱ & ۸۲±۳۸ before and ۰.۵±۰.۴ & ۰.۴±۰.۶ ,mU/ml, respectively one months after daily ingestion of ۵۰ mg LT۳-IH and Cytomel, respectively. This study demonstrates similar effectiveness of LT۳-IH and Cytomel in reduction of serum TSH and elevation of serum T۳ in patients with hypothyroidism.
