Abstract:
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In the meat industry, inefficient management of organic waste exists, therefore the study aims to evaluate different bovine and poultry organic residues as food substrates during larval development of the black soldier fly, such as a sustainable alternative to obtain high protein meal.METHODS: The research evaluates the use of organic waste from cattle and poultry slaughterhouses, as food substrate for black soldier fly larvae, including raw beef blood T۱, raw beef viscera T۲, cooked beef blood T۳, cooked beef viscera T۴, raw chicken viscera T۶ and cooked chicken viscera T۷; further, as a control measure balanced feed (۷ treatments and ۵ replicates). Larvae were fed for ۵ days and processed to make meal by drying and grinding; evaluating mortality, weight, size, proximal chemical composition, and apparent digestibility to determine the most viable substrate, analyzing effects and significance by multifactorial ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis.FINDING: The results show Mortality (F = ۹۱۷,۸۱, p < ۰,۰۰۰۱): T۱ y T۳ with ۷۶,۴۰ ± ۲,۸۶ (%) (F = ۹۱۷,۸۱, p < ۰,۰۰۰۱), following T۶ with ۶۹,۶۷ ± ۴,۵۵%, T۷ with ۲۴,۰۰ ± ۳,۴۸%, T۲ with ۴,۶۰ ± ۱,۹۲ %, T۵ y T۴, both with ۴,۲۰ ± ۲,۰۰ %. Weight (F = ۸۲۵,۶۲, p < ۰,۰۰۰۱): T۲ with ۱,۷۸ ± ۰,۲۲ gram outperformed the control T۵ (۱,۷۶ ± ۰,۵۰ gram), T۴ with ۱,۴۵ ± ۰,۰۶ g and T۷ with ۱,۶۶ ± ۰,۰۷ gram. Size (F = ۲۴۸,۹۵, p < ۰,۰۰۰۱): T۵ with ۱۶,۰۳ ± ۰,۳۴ mm, T۲ with ۱۵,۸۶ ± ۰,۲۲ mm, T۴ with ۱۴,۷۲ ± ۰,۳۵ mm and finally, ۱۴,۵۱ ± ۰,۱۴ millimeter in T۷. Proximal chemical analysis of crude protein and fat: T۲ resulted in the following results ۵۰,۸۱ % and ۲۱,۸۸ %, T۴ with ۵۳,۹۰% y ۱۵,۰۴%, T۷ with ۴۲,۶۳ % and ۳۲,۰۳%, and T۵ con ۴۱,۱ % and ۱۹.۵۵%, respectively. Digestibility: T۵ with ۲۰,۳۹%, T۲ with ۱۲,۶۶%, T۴ with ۱۰,۶۱% and T۷ with ۵,۹۷%. T۲ raw beef viscera were determined to be the most viable substrate, followed by T۴ cooked beef viscera and T۷ cooked chicken viscera.CONCLUSIONS: Testing the effectiveness of cattle viscera as substrate, the experimental data presented may help design a process for an effective treatment method for slaughterhouse waste, which might benefit developing nations in managing their waste effectively, generating high protein meal, with the potential for a circular bioeconomy.
