The most crucial thing environmental experts might point to is global environmental change. However, understanding the magnitude of the adaptation challenge at a global scale is incomplete, constrained by a limited understanding of if and how adaptation is taking place. Climate change is rarely the sole or primary motivator for adaptation action. Extreme events are important adaptation stimuli across regions. Here we review the methodology for understanding climate change and the effects of climate change on the environment and our lives.
