Abstract:
The success of a port depends on its performance in an environment with an acceptable level of risk. This can be achieved when their trained competent workforces perform their duties in a safe workplace. Workforce-related mishaps not only create severe problems for the port and its productivity but also their impact may extend beyond the port boundaries. Improving the safety level for port logistics workers is directly related to the effectiveness of their training. The main objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of the training offered to port logistics workers and its impact on enhancing their safety. This paper is based on the findings of a qualitative case study research performed in the Chabahar port. The research shows the inefficiency of port logistics workers’ competency development and training system. The underlying factors can be summarized in three major areas, namely; funding, safety awareness, and operational issues. To address these factors a number of recommendations have been suggested with the aim to resolve the impediments that hinder the increasing effectiveness of training.
