Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Radiographer’s Profession

In recent years, a lot of attention has been paid to the application and implementation of artificial intelligence in medical imaging and clinical radiology, and this domain is changing and developing rapidly. However, discussion about the impact of such technology on the radiographer roles is lacking. In this paper, we discuss the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the radiography profession. Numerous domains such as pre-examination assessment, examination planning, image acquisition and processing will be discussed. We also highlight the opportunities that artificial intelligence brings including enhancing patient-facing care, augmented cross-modality education and working, increased technological skill and extension of radiographer responsibility into artificial intelligence-supported image reporting and auditing roles.
