Textual Procedures in Intralingual Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Iran

In recent years, some Iranian movies or series have been presented with Persian subtitles, which facilitates the accessibility of the deaf and hard of hearing viewers to audio-visual products. Due to the importance of media accessibility and the important role of audio-visual productions in people's lives, the present study aims to identify and evaluate the textual procedures adopted in the subtitles of the two films “Jandar” and “Saint Petersburg”. For this purpose, first, the language skills and challenges of the deaf and hard of hearing viewers for reading the subtitle are described, then with considering the language skills and expectations and in order to identify the applied strategies, the film dialogues are compared with the subtitle. After that, this study analyzes the compliance of the strategies with the standards obtained from the previous studies. The analysis of the film dialogues and strategies has shown that the applied strategies in subtitles have not been applied uniformly, and the subtitles do not conform much to the principles of sublingual subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing. Therefore, providing subtitles according to the needs and language skills of the deaf and hard of hearing requires specific standards and integrated implementation according to the appropriate situation
