A Concise Viewpoint on Menopause, Hormone-Replacement Therapy and Breast Cancer Risk abstract

Menopause is accompanied by numerousphysiological and psychological symptomsdegrading the quality of life. Hormone ReplacementTherapy (HRT), introduced in the 1960s, effectivelymanages many menopausal symptoms. During the1970s, a link between estrogen therapy and increasedincidence of endometrial cancer was found andresolved by combination-HRT containing estrogenand progestin. Nevertheless, its usage declineddramatically when the Women’s Health Initiative(WHI) published its findings in 2002 reportingexcess risk of breast cancer (BC) with HRT usage, particularly with the combination regime.Eventually, studies contradicting this finding werepublished. Recently, significantly higher BC risk incombined HRT users has been re-established.
