Abstract:
In order to investigate the effect of methanol and glycine betaine application on yield, destructive biomarkers and antioxidant enzymes activity for improving the resistance to abiotic stresses in C۳ plants such as the fodder beet cultivars, this experiment was conducted as a combined split-split plot based on randomized complete block design with ۳ replications in Qom and Hamedan, Iran sites. The concentration of methanol in ۳ levels (control, ۱۵ an d ۳۰% by volume of methanol) as the first treatment, glycine betaine in ۲ levels (control and ۴ g.L-۱ per methanol) as the second treatment and different cultivars at ۶ levels as the third factor, were considered. Foliar spraying was performed at three intervals every two weeks. The results showed that the sites had a significant difference in most of the evaluated traits. Methanol spraying also made a significant effect on root yield, sugar, potassium and sodium content and some antioxidant enzymes activity such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, rubisco and malondialdehyde. Glycine betaine foliar application showed significant differences in root yield, sugar, potassium and sodium content, activity of enzymes and biomarkers. Genotypes also differed in some of the evaluated traits. Based on the results, the application of methanol and glycine betaine are recommended to improve the quantitative and qualitative traits of fodder beet under similar conditions.
